vignette: τ

The word vignette, meaning brief image or memory, or a photograph which fades into the background, was chosen for the title due to the short fading ideas and the brief moments of bright moments within this piece.

As the idea for this piece was inspired by the imagery of time, the symbol, τ, commonly used to represent time, is used in the same fashion in the title.

It (the use of τ in the title) is a reference to two previous albums I have published in 2022, Sketches "α" and Sketches "β", however, this piece, although slightly improvisational and impromptu (in the moment), is much more structured than the Sketches.

Part I

Leaving out certain notes (the 5th) from full chords, having space between the different ideas, letting the sound ring/fade out, are based on the idea of space and ambience. There is an occasional sudden and bright moment, which adds colour and vibrance, which is based on the idea of light/stars appearing within the empty space.

Part II

The Tempo for this Part is 60 BPM. With the Csus4 playing at each beat, it signifies the ticking of the clock, which in turn represents the passing of time, while incorporating ideas and relationship (between the notes) from the previous part. The sustained C provides an interesting sound (and provides the 7th, mirroring Part I), which can be heard throughout. The part closes with a chromatic down Dm7, similar to the end of the beginning/opening of Part I, followed by a Abm7, to end Part II.

Part III

This part combines the ideas from the previous part, and becomes much more grand and energetic (almost like a giant bell due to the lower octaves), with an increased tempo (75 BPM). The ending (the descend) concludes this part, which ends in a fashion similar to Part II, and letting the last chord fade out like in Part I, which leaves space for a continuation (more ideas for any future parts/ideas).

Art

The circles, from small to big, each represent the seconds, minutes and hour respectively.

The starting point of the lines and their lengths are the second, minute and hour hands of a clock.

The minute hand is pointing at 12, the hour hand at 3, and the second hand at 19. "3 o'clock" signifies the 3 parts, and the 19 for τ, the 19th letter.


Overall, this piece hopes to bring about ideas of space, (the passing of) time, and being ambient, minimalistic, introducing ideas, and merges them together.
